What WinePerson is

A foundation you can actually earn.

Wine knowledge usually comes in two flavors: intimidating, or vague. WinePerson is a third option — a clear set of foundations, a fair assessment, and an honest status when you pass.

What it is

Foundational wine literacy

A focused, ten-question assessment across the five foundations of wine. Study first using free WineTutorial and Encyclopedia of Wine articles, or just take it when you're ready.

  • Curriculum-backed and honestly scoped
  • Untimed, mobile-friendly, free to learn
  • An earned status that stays private to you
What it isn't

Not a credential or a club

We're careful about what WinePerson claims to be. It is a sign of foundational literacy — nothing more, and we say so plainly.

  • Not a professional certification or sommelier-level credential
  • Not a public profile or social network
  • Not a marketplace, mailbox, or identity service
How it works

Tasting Vocabulary

Appearance, aroma, palate, finish — the words tasters use.

Serving & Storage

Questions

The honest answers.

No. WinePerson Level 1 is a sign of foundational wine literacy — not a professional certification, not a sommelier-level credential, and not affiliated with WSET, the Court of Master Sommeliers, or any credentialing body. We say so on the result and on the earned status itself.

Learning is free — the WineTutorial and Encyclopedia of Wine articles the curriculum is built on are open to read. You create an account to take the assessment and hold your earned status.

Ten single-choice questions: two from each of the five foundations (Wine Styles & Varieties, Grapes & Regions, Tasting Vocabulary, Serving & Storage, Food Pairing Basics), drawn from a fifteen-question bank in random order. Pass mark is 70%. It's untimed.

Nothing bad. We show which foundations to revisit, point you back to the right articles, and you can retake it whenever you like at no cost. There's no "failed" stamp and your score history stays private.

No. It's private to your account by default. There's no public profile, no directory, and nothing for strangers to browse. If we ever add a way to share it, it'll be something you turn on — never the default.
